Seattle Garage Doors | Is your garage door haunted?

It’s a beautiful summer night in Seattle, and you’re planning a relaxing evening at home in the backyard wit your family and friends. You just finished up cleaning things in the garage, and after all, what will it hurt to leave the garage door open for a while until the kids get home form their bike ride?

It doesn’t really sound like a big deal, leaving your garage door open for a little bit? But to the bad guys who are driving through your neighborhood seeking out “targets of opportunity”, it’s an open invitation to help themselves to your tools, bikes, camping gear, and other items you store in the garage.

Criminals know that this time of year when unsupervised and open garage doors can be found in every neighborhood. As a matter of fact, the bad guys are counting on you to give them less than two minutes inside your garage so they can victimize yet another unsuspecting family. According to police, this concern is city wide and not restricted to any particular area.

Homeowners are often willing to let a small amount of convenience get in the way of being mindful of the safety of our family and property. Every summer, police departments around the country receive reports of people who leave their cars unlocked in their open garages. After just a few minutes when they return to their car, things have been stolen off the seat and out of the center console.

While much of the theft from cars and garages is small items that are often easily replaced, when we are a victim, it still makes us feel violated and no one wants a stranger inside their home. Always remember to keep your garage door closed all year long. If you don’t, the message you are sending to criminals, “An open garage, equals an open invitation.”

Whenever we drive around town and we see garage doors that don’t look very good but are clearly in fine operating function we wonder why the owners don’t take a day to spruce the door up a bit. We definitely wonder this when it comes to businesses. The way your home or business looks is a reflection of you, or so people will assume. So, if they see an old run down garage door they will perceive the entire home or business to also be run down.

The funny thing is that it is quite easy to make the door look great and new again. Painting the door will literally take one afternoon and will make your garage door go from looking shabby to fabulous! You will want to make sure you sand the door down and clean it to start, paint a base coat, let it dry, paint a second coat, let it dry, and huzzah! you have a garage door that looks so much better!

You can even add garage door accessories like hinges and lights to the door for a little extra panache! If you are looking for ideas you can always look on pinterest or go to your local hardware store like Home Depot or OSH and ask them for ideas and advice. It doesn’t have to cost a lot of money to fix that door up!

Residential garages tend to become catch-alls for all things both needed and not needed in the home. But instead of gigantic storage units, wouldn’t it be more useful for your garage to be organized and uncluttered, a calming space through which to enter or leave your home, rather than a constant headache and source of stress? In an organized garage, you’d store only the things you actually use, including some essential items that every garage should have.

1. A fire extinguisher. The first of these items is a fire extinguisher, but don’t toss it in the corner, leave it on your workbench, or rest it atop a pile of stuff. The fire extinguisher should be wall mounted near the door to your home’s interior if you have an attached garage. If the garage is unattached, the fire extinguisher should be mounted within easy reach of the exit. A good way to maintain your fire extinguisher’s utility is to shake it up every time you change the clocks. (Shake it until your hear that the contents can move around freely.)

2. Carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. Carbon monoxide and smoke detectors go hand in hand with the fire extinguisher, and their batteries should be checked every time you shake the fire extinguisher. A smoke detector’s job is obvious (hopefully it will alert you to a fire danger while the fire extinguisher can still get the job done); a carbon monoxide detector is also a must-have, as it detects and alerts you to the presence of an odorless yet deadly gas in the garage.

3. Kitty litter. Even dog owners should keep kitty litter in the garage. Not only is the absorbent material a great liner for litter boxes, it’s also great for cleaning up oil spills quickly and safely. Leave a small bag in your garage so you’ll always be prepared.

Although garage door openers have become safer and safer over the years, garage-related accidents are still surprisingly common. It’s just that the source of the danger has shifted: Now garage doors are generally equipped with sensors and motion detectors that go a long way towards preventing accidents caused by the mechanism itself. Instead, the hazards are our own fault. The good news is that many of these garage-related safety hazards are easily preventable and easily fixed.

Many garages are cluttered and crammed with boxes and other items strewn against the walls and stacked precariously in corners, a common sight that is also a common contributor to garage accidents. Trips, falls, and stumbles are common garage accidents, and tripping on clutter is one of the most likely ways you’ll hurt yourself in the garage.

To save yourself from an unnecessary broken arm or twisted ankle, get to work getting rid of any piles on the floor. This may be overwhelming. Try starting with a small area of the garage and sorting through all the stuff, deciding what can stay, and what should be sold, trashed, or donated. Repeat this process in small, manageable chunks of the garage and you should have it sorted and somewhat clutter-free in no time. (But if it’s all just too much for you, professional organizers can swoop in and save the day.)

Once the piles have been removed, it’s time to turn your attention to the floor. Slipping on a wet surface is another commonly reported garage-related accident. If you have any slippery grease stains, use a degreasing product to get rid of them. To prevent future slip hazards, consider treating your garage floor with a special kind of epoxy-based paint. An epoxy floor is a popular choice for garage floors because it’s easy to install, easy to clean, and repels oil.

If you’re someone who works on cars professionally or as a hobby from your home garage, you know there’s no workout more brutal than a day spent on your back beneath an automobile’s undercarriage. The constant strain on your lower back, neck, and shoulders from hours of twisting and reaching, groping, lifting, and straining for tools will take a toll before very long. And besides the punishment you’re inflicting daily on your body, there’s also all the time you spend jacking the car and ensuring that the car is jacked safely. It’s no wonder you’ve been putting off those repairs for weeks. It’s time to acknowledge that there’s an easier, better, more convenient option available. It’s time to invest in a residential garage car lift system.
Garage car lifts come in a range of styles and configurations, from a variety of manufacturers, with a range of model choices that is now the most diverse it’s ever been. The prices for garage car lifts are also quite reasonable now, and installation is also relatively easy. Knowing which garage car lift will be right for you depends on assessing the space you have and the nature of the projects you hope to complete with it.
With so many garage car lift manufacturers, lift types, and lift models to choose from, it can be difficult to know how to start the buying process. In the US, garage car lifts are made by around 60 companies, but the range of products on offer is vast. A simple electric scissor jack lift costs around $1,000, for example, but you could also opt to pay $10,000 for an in-ground hydraulic lift, the kind you normally see in professional auto-repair shops. Whether you’re seriously into cars or an every-once-in-a-while dabbler should have great influence on how much of an investment you make.

There are many reasons to replace a garage door.  Maybe damaged, squeezing and rattling?  Maybe it just doesn’t match your home any more and just is plain ugly.  Whatever the reason for replacing your garage door there are a number of options for today’s home owner when it comes to residential garage door materials.

What garage door material is best?

Well, there a lot of options when it comes to the types of new garage doors, mainly: steel, aluminum, wood and fiberglass.   Each of these materials offers their own unique set of qualities and drawbacks.

Steel and aluminum garage doors can be painted to match your homes exterior, and are available in an array of design options. Steel is available in several gauge grades, and the higher the gauge, the thinner the steel. If you want a tough steel garage door to stand up to the test of time, you will want at least a 24 gauge steel.  Due to steel’s poor insulating qualities, steel might not be the best choice for people who spend a lot of time in the garage.  Aluminum has even more design options. While it is usually less expensive than steel garage doors, it is also lighter and thus more likely to suffer dings and dents.

Nothing can replace or replicate the homey look of a stained garage door. Wood can provide a traditional garage door to many home styles. As with any wood product a wood garage door will requires greater maintenance and upkeep to keep it looking its best.  Depending on cost considerations, steel or aluminum may be considered.

Fiberglass garage doors are generally used only in specific applications.  If you live near a marine environment, they will not rust, unlike steel garage doors and will stand up to the elements better than a wood garage door.  Fiberglass garage doors are also dent resistant, but is a poor insulator and may quickly fade.

You’ll probably notice that your garage gets very warm during the summer months, maybe even uncomfortably hot. Outside temperatures rise as the day goes on, often peaking in mid to late afternoon. During the time, the direct rays of the sun will heat up whatever they fall upon, especially if your garage is western facing. Living with a too-hot garage can be unbearable. Luckily, there are ways to keep your hot garage cool in the summer months.
Picking the right solution for your too-hot garage requires knowing the various sources of the problem. In the summertime the sun is only adding to the heat that tends to collect in garages year round. For example, any cars parked in the garage will radiate heat, even if they were only driven for 10 or 15 minutes (especially true in summer). The car’s mechanical parks will send heat waves into the space for hours after you’ve parked it. Combined with the sun’s summer rays, and an insulated door if you have one, a hot car will have your garage feeling like an oven in no time. This kind of low level infrared heat might even be detectable the next day!
The solution to this heat wave inside your garage is simple: To cool off your garage as efficiently as possible, invest in powerful fan or two. Sidewall ventilation fans are designed to coax hot air out of the stuffy room and expel it outside, not just move hot air around. There are a variety of fans on the market that function this way. To find one that is most likely to get the job done, look for a ventilation system that can displace thousands of cubic feet of air per minute. Some brief web surfing should yield plenty of results. Not sure which fan will best at beating the heat? Use price as a guide. The best made, most efficient fans will always cost more. You should buy the most fan you can for your particular budget.

An unsafe garage door is just as it says: Unsafe.  But so many people don’t seem to mind having an unsafe garage door, and instead, just carry on about their day without ever even thinking about it.  In fact, we’re fairly certain that most people that have an unsafe garage door have no idea that they have an evil death trap just waiting for them in their garage door; an evil beast that is lying in wait, hoping to ensnare an unsuspecting victim in it’s gaping maw.

Okay, so that was a little extreme and might be better placed in a Stephen King novel, but you get the idea.  An unsafe garage door is a serious safety hazard, and here we’ll outline just a couple of the things that can happen if you don’t keep up on your garage door safety testing and your garage door maintenance:

  • You, or some of your loved ones could get trapped in the path of the garage door while it’s closing, which can lead to serious injury, including even death.  Not a good place to be when you want to stay alive and not crushed.
  • Something you own could get trapped beneath the garage door, which could ultimately destroy whatever is caught in the path of your garage door.
  • You could be trapped in your garage if you’re caught in an emergency that has left you without power.  This could have some serious implications about your safety and well being.

So think about this and ask yourself if you ever want to catch yourself in these situations.
